Vice-Chancellor of UEW sued

A lawyer, Theophilus Ade Poju has filed a suit against the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni.

Mr. Poju is contesting the legality of Rev Afful-Broni’s occupation of the Vice Chancellor position of the University.

In a Citi News interview, Mr. Poju defended his suit saying “as per the statutes of the university, anybody who holds that office must hold it for a continuous term of four years.”

“By September 2020, Afful-Broni will be 60 years by which time he wouldn’t have completed the four-year term. That alone is against the statutes of the university.”

The lawyer also raised an issue with how Prof. Afful-Broni was selected as Professor Mawutor Avoke’s replacement in the first place saying there was supposed to be a search party and a vetting but “all of these things did not take place.”

To him, the senior most dean at the university, Prof. Samuel Asiedu Addo, should have been Professor Mawutor Avoke’s replacement as Vice Chancellor.

“But out of malice, out of ill intention, out of bad faith, the council invested Afful-Boni as the active vice chancellor which is unlawful as per their own statutes where these things are not in consonance with good governance,” he stated.

The school is currently in what has been described as leadership crisis after Prof. Afful-Broni’s dismissal of some lecturers sparked student protests that led to the school being shut down indefinitely.

Students and the University Teachers Association of Ghana have accused the Vice Chancellor of trying to sabotage the school.

In the latest development, Prof. Afful-Broni and other stakeholders have since agreed to work towards calm in the school.
