UTAG-UG votes against suspension of strike
596 members of the UG chapter voted against UTAG’s decision to suspend the strike
Members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG)-University of Ghana (UG) chapter have voted against the decision taken by the National Executive Council (NEC) for its members to resume lectures.
The NEC resolved to suspend the strike by the University teachers for two weeks to allow for negotiations for better conditions of service.
However, the NEC left it to their chapters in all 15 public universities to vote or reject the decision to suspend the strike.
596 members of the UG chapter voted against UTAG’s decision to suspend the strike.
127 members of the UG chapter however voted in support of the suspension.
UTAG national, resolved to temporarily suspend its strike.
The decision was taken by the NEC of UTAG at an emergency meeting on Monday, 21 February, 2022 at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
UTAG has been on strike since January 10 to force the government to restore an agreement they had in 2012 concerning their conditions of service.
An injunction has, however, been placed on the strike after an appeal by the National Labour Commission (NLC) after the court had earlier ordered UTAG and NLC to settle their differences out of the court.
According to UTAG, the suspension of the strike will last until March 4 by which time they believe they will receive a favourable outcome from government.
They want the Basic plus Market Premium of a lecturer which stands at $2,084.42 to be restored as agreed in 2012.
