Michigan’s secretary of state, Jocelyn Benson, said that “hundreds of thousands of ballots in our largest jurisdictions” were still being counted, as of 7 a.m. ET. According to the HuffPost Elections Hub, at 89% of the estimated votes counted, Trump leads Michigan, with 49.6%. Biden has 48.8% of the vote.

Republican Bob Good defeated Cameron Webb in a toss-up race in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, keeping the seat for the GOP. Good is a former Liberty University fundraiser who describes himself as a “biblical conservative.” Webb is a doctor who has been treating COVID-19 patients while running for office.

Nevada has put out an update on the status of its vote count. The state said it has counted all early votes, mail-in votes received before Nov. 2, and in-person Election Day votes. Still left to count are mail ballots received on Election Day, mail ballots received over the next week and provisional ballots. The state said its next update will come at 9 a.m. Thursday. According to the HuffPost Election Hub, with 67% of the votes counted, Biden leads Nevada with 50% of the vote. Trump is at 47.9%.

Biden campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon put out a statement slamming Trump’s comments. “If the president makes good on his threat to go to court to try to prevent the proper tabulation of votes, we have legal teams standing by ready to deploy to resist that effort. And they will prevail,” she wrote. Both Republicans and Democrats have enlisted legal teams to stand by and be ready to head to court, should the election outcome be murky. Roughly 300 lawsuits have already been filed about the election around the country, the AP reported.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, has pushed back against Trump’s claims of a “stolen election” while votes are still being counted. “We still have over 1 million mail ballots to count in Pennsylvania,” Wolf wrote, vowing that every vote will be counted. “Let’s be clear: This is a partisan attack on Pennsylvania’s elections, our votes, and democracy,” the governor said.

Californians voted to approve Proposition 22, which allows ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft to classify their drivers as contractors rather than as employees who would get benefits like a minimum wage and health insurance. The companies have fought hard against the law because converting drivers to employees would come with a big price tag. The gig economy giants spent more than $185 million on the campaign, making it the most expensive ballot initiative in the state’s history.

In remarks delivered from the White House in the early hours of Wednesday, President Trump repeatedly claimed he’d won states that have yet to be definitively called and said, without a shred of evidence, that a “sad group of people are trying to disenfranchise” voters. “Frankly, we did win this election,” the president said, despite the fact that votes in several states have not been tallied and the outcome of the election remains unclear.  He went on to call the ongoing vote counting a “fraud on our nation.”

Maine, which splits its electoral votes, is projected to give at least one of its four votes to Biden, AP reports. Biden won the state’s 1st Congressional District. In 2016, Maine split its electoral votes, awarding three to Democrat Hillary Clinton and one to Trump.

Facebook joins Twitter in adding labels to Trump’s posts about the election results. As the label points out, ballots will continue to be counted until a winner is projected. No one is casting votes after the polls are closed; the ballots left to be counted are mail-in or early ballots that were cast before the polls closed.

More from HuffPost’s S.V. Date on the scene around the White House: North of the White House — within yards of the church where Trump staged a photo opportunity holding a Bible after using tear gas and beatings to have the area cleared — there were a few thousand anti-Trump protesters on what is now Black Lives Matter Plaza. Beyond the layers of barriers, Trump opted to hold his election night political gathering in the White House itself, where dozens of invited political supporters, party officials and family members mingled watching returns.

HuffPost’s S.V. Date reports on the scene around the White House: Election night, meanwhile, brought an eerie calm to the downtown area surrounding both the White House and Trump’s hotel a few blocks down Pennsylvania Avenue. A tall security fence, backed in places with concrete highway barriers, was completed around the White House complex — including all of Lafayette Square — over the past several days. Massive trucks, some with snow plows, blocked off some streets, and police cars with red and blue lights blocked off other intersections. Some of the only vehicles moving in the cordoned-off zone were small luxury buses running guests to and from Trump’s hotel, where hotel and Trump campaign staff kept out all but registered guests. A HuffPost reporter who asked to enter was turned away as right-wing British politician Nigel Farage emerged and a group wearing Trump 2020 paraphernalia and announcing they were attending a party in former acting Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell’s suite were allowed in.

On a call with reporters this morning, Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien said the campaign believes the president will win “if we count all legal ballots.” His statement comes hours after Trump prematurely declared victory, despite battleground states like Michigan and Pennsylvania continuing to tally votes. During a speech at the White House early Wednesday, Trump said he would demand the Supreme Court stop “voting.” (Voting has already ended in every state.) Trump has repeatedly tried to undermine the integrity of mail-in ballots and has baselessly accused Democrats of trying to steal the election. “How come every time they count mail-in ballot dumps they are so devastating in their percentage and power of destruction?” Trump tweeted this morning. Millions of Americans voted by mail this year amid COVID-19 concerns. Voting by mail is perfectly legal, of course. Election officials across the country have rejected Trump’s claims of widespread voter fraud.

In a series of tweets Wednesday morning, former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) cast doubt on Trump’s chances of winning the state after a recount. Walker and GOP-led state legislatures narrowed the state’s recount law in 2017. Walker went on to narrowly lose his race for reelection in 2018.

Joe Biden’s campaign on Wednesday morning slammed President Donald Trump over various lies he told overnight about the ongoing election tally. Early Wednesday, Trump falsely declared victory and attempted to cast doubt on the vote counting process that would likely go on for another day or more.  He lied again on Twitter, falsely alleging “surprise ballot dumps” that were making a dent in his lead in key states. In reality, it was the Republican legislatures in key states like Pennsylvania and Michigan that blocked efforts to count votes earlier as other states did. Biden’s campaign said at a press conference that Trump’s attempts to halt the voting process wouldn’t work in his favor. “If Donald Trump got his wish and we stopped counting ballots right now, Joe Biden would be president,” a spokesperson said. She said there was a “clear path to victory” for Biden and expected him to secure the 270 electoral votes needed for victory sometime today.

Ballots are still being counted in Maine’s Senate race. Republican Sen. Susan Collins’ lead narrowed overnight, sliding to just under 50% of the votes with 70% of precincts reporting. Democrat Sara Gideon trails at the moment with nearly 44% of the votes. The race is one of the mostly closely watched of 2020. Winning Collins’ seat is key for Democrats in their quest to regain control of the Senate. Independents Lisa Savage and Max Linn are also fighting to unseat Collins. In Maine, a candidate needs a majority of votes to win. If none of the candidates win an outright majority (50% plus one of the votes), ballot-counting will enter a new phase of tabulation, potentially delaying results by several days. Trump again tried to cast doubt on the election Wednesday morning, arguing “surprise ballot dumps” were causing him to lose states. This is not true. Mail-in ballots in several states are still being tallied Wednesday morning, but these were received by the deadline and were not part of “surprise” “dumps.”

One more Republican leader has now urged patience with the election results: Spencer Cox, who is projected to become Utah’s next governor. In a tweet posted Wednesday morning, Cox said there is “nothing nefarious about it taking a few days to count all legitimate votes.” He previously dismissed as “garbage” a Trump campaign official’s claim that Democrats would try to “steal back” the election as votes continued to be tallied in the days after Nov. 3.

Neither Michigan nor Wisconsin have counted enough ballots to declare a winner, but the Biden campaign is optimistic. A campaign official claimed that Biden has an “insurmountable vote-by-mail lead” in the Great Lakes State, and predicted that both races will be called in their favor later today.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger told ABC’s “Good Morning America” that vote counting in the state would be done by the end of the day. “By midday, we should be pretty much through it. Probably by the end of the day, we’ll definitely have it done,” he said. “Over 4.8 million Georgians voted, which is also a record turnout for a presidential election,” he said.

Even stalwart Republicans are not buying Trump’s claim of victory just yet. “There’s just no basis to make that argument tonight,” former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) told ABC News. “There just isn’t. All these votes have to be counted that are in now. … I disagree with what he did tonight.” Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum (R) also said he “was very distressed” by the president’s remarks, which came in the earliest hours of Wednesday morning. Read more from HuffPost’s Ron Dicker here:

Republican Rep. Don Bacon defeated a challenge from progressive Democrat Kara Eastman in a tight race for Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District. Eastman’s loss is a blow to the progressive wing of the party. But it wasn’t all bad news for Democrats — Joe Biden picked up a portion of the state’s electoral votes.
