UniMAC Student Fatally Hit on N1 Highway as Driver Escapes

A tragic incident occurred on Monday, 19 January 2026, when a student of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) lost their life after being struck by a vehicle on the N1 highway near the Dzorwulu traffic lights. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver involved in the accident fled the scene immediately, leaving the victim critically injured and unattended.

The circumstances surrounding the accident remain unclear, but initial reports suggest that the student was crossing the highway when the vehicle hit them. Commuters and passersby at the scene immediately called for emergency assistance, but despite swift intervention, the student succumbed to their injuries before reaching a hospital.

Local authorities have launched an investigation into the accident and are urging members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or have information about the fleeing driver to come forward. “We are committed to ensuring that the driver is identified and brought to justice,” a spokesperson for the police said. “The safety of all road users is our top priority.”

This unfortunate event has once again drawn attention to the ongoing road safety challenges in and around Accra, particularly on major highways such as the N1. The highway, known for heavy traffic during peak hours, has been the site of several accidents in recent years. Road safety advocates emphasize the importance of pedestrian awareness, strict adherence to traffic laws, and responsible driving to prevent further tragedies.

The UniMAC community has expressed deep grief over the loss of one of its students. Social media platforms have been flooded with messages of condolence and calls for improved safety measures to protect students and pedestrians alike. Faculty members and student leaders have called for a review of road infrastructure near the university to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Families and friends of the deceased are mourning the sudden loss and are appealing for justice. Authorities have promised to intensify patrols and implement measures to ensure safer crossings for pedestrians. Meanwhile, the public is being reminded to exercise caution when traveling on busy highways, particularly in areas with high pedestrian traffic.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the need for both drivers and pedestrians to prioritize safety on the roads. It underscores the importance of swift law enforcement intervention when accidents occur and the critical role of public cooperation in helping to prevent and respond to such incidents.
