Twelve Structures Destroyed in Fire at Mallam Atta Market

A destructive fire swept through Mallam Atta Market, leaving twelve wooden structures in ruins. Among the losses were six homes and six shops, as well as a 40‑foot container that served as a cold storage facility, causing severe disruption for traders and residents.

Firefighters responded promptly to the blaze, working to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring stalls. Thankfully, no casualties were reported, but the economic impact on the affected traders and families is substantial.

Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of panic as residents and traders hurriedly evacuated, watching helplessly as their properties were consumed. Local authorities are now assessing the extent of the damage, providing immediate relief to victims, and investigating the cause of the fire.

The community has rallied to support those affected, with neighbours and fellow traders donating essentials such as food, water, and temporary shelter. Officials have urged victims to register their losses to access government and local aid.

The incident has sparked calls for safer market infrastructure and improved fire‑prevention measures to prevent similar disasters in the future, highlighting the vulnerability of wooden market structures in densely populated trading areas.
