Francis Adomako has been elected as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Secretary, defeating two other contenders in the party’s regional executive elections.
Adomako secured 492 votes to win the contest, while Michael Amoah Awuku placed second with 331 votes. Former Ashanti Regional Communications Officer Paul Yandoh finished third with 105 votes.
Yandoh had left his previous position as Regional Communications Officer to contest the secretaryship, making the election an important test of his popularity within the party’s regional structure.
His campaign attracted additional attention after Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene, a member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), publicly endorsed Yandoh and campaigned for him on social media. The unusual cross-party support generated considerable discussion ahead of the vote.
Despite the attention surrounding his campaign, Yandoh was unable to secure enough delegate support to win the position.
Adomako’s victory was decisive, with his 492 votes giving him a significant margin over Amoah Awuku and Yandoh. His election means he will now take charge of the regional secretariat and work alongside the other newly elected executives.
The election forms part of the NPP’s broader reorganisation of its structures across the country. The party is seeking to strengthen its grassroots organisation and prepare for its next phase of political activity, including the 2028 general elections.
The Ashanti Region remains strategically important to the NPP, making the composition of its regional executive team particularly significant.
Adomako will be expected to coordinate administrative activities within the regional secretariat and work with constituency executives and other party officials to strengthen the party’s operations across the region.
His victory also comes alongside the election of Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA, as NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman.
The new regional leadership will therefore have the responsibility of working together to promote unity, improve coordination and mobilise the party’s supporters.
For Yandoh, the result means he will not be part of the new Ashanti Regional executive team after choosing to vacate his communications position to pursue the secretaryship.
The outcome is expected to generate further discussion among NPP members as the party evaluates its internal structures and seeks to rebuild following its performance in the 2024 general elections.
Adomako’s strong showing gives him a clear mandate from the delegates, and attention will now turn to how he and the other newly elected executives perform in their respective positions.
