A commercial motorcyclist, popularly known as an okada rider, has reportedly appealed for justice after allegedly being assaulted by a Ghana Prisons Service officer and three inmates at Kenyasi in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region.
The rider, identified as Opoku Afriyie, reportedly became involved in the incident after he was hired by a client to transport a sack of yams.
According to an account attributed to Afriyie, he was carrying out the assignment when the prison officer, accompanied by three inmates, confronted him and accused him of stealing the sack of yams.
Afriyie reportedly denied the allegation and attempted to explain the circumstances surrounding the load. However, he alleged that the situation escalated and he was physically assaulted by the officer and the inmates.
He further alleged that a cutlass was used during the attack, leaving him with injuries.
Following the alleged assault, the prison officer and the three inmates reportedly escorted Afriyie to the local police station. Officers at the station are said to have noticed the severity of his condition and directed that he be taken to a hospital for medical attention.
The incident has reportedly sparked concern among the rider’s relatives, who have rejected the allegation that Afriyie stole the yams.
His family is calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and wants any person found responsible for wrongdoing to be dealt with according to the law.
The Kenyasi District Police Command has reportedly commenced investigations to establish what led to the confrontation and determine the facts surrounding the allegations.
The case has also raised questions about the appropriate handling of disputes involving members of the public, security personnel and inmates. Authorities are expected to establish whether the allegations of assault occurred and whether any offence was committed.
For now, the allegations remain subject to investigation, and no conclusion has been established regarding the responsibility of the individuals involved.
The incident has attracted attention in the Kenyasi community as residents await the outcome of the police investigation.
