Three men have been arrested in Zimbabwe in connection with a series of alleged cellphone thefts involving passengers travelling in a vehicle in the Riverside area of Odzi.
The suspects have been identified as Fungai Muuduri of Dangamvura, Wayne Ndiweni of Sakubva, and Vincent Chele of New Dangare in Sakubva.
The arrests followed an incident involving two passengers who reportedly boarded a grey Honda Fit at Mount Mainje bus stop with the intention of travelling to Christmas Pass.
According to the information available, the passengers were identified as John Makina of Nyazura and 45-year-old Tapiwa Chiwanza.
The journey reportedly took an unexpected turn when the vehicle reached the Osborne turn-off. The passengers were allegedly informed that the vehicle had developed a mechanical problem and were asked to get out.
After leaving the vehicle, the passengers reportedly discovered that their mobile phones were missing.
Rather than abandoning the matter, Chiwanza reportedly hired a motorcycle and followed the Honda Fit in an attempt to locate the vehicle and confront those inside.
His efforts eventually led him to the Riverside area, where he reportedly stopped the vehicle and questioned its occupants.
According to the account, Chiwanza managed to recover his cellphone from the vehicle before reporting the matter to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) at Odzi.
The report to police subsequently led to the arrest of the three suspects.
Police reportedly searched the vehicle and recovered 11 mobile phones, along with six balaclavas and pepper spray.
The items recovered have reportedly become part of the investigation as authorities seek to establish whether the suspects may be connected to other reported thefts in the area.
The recovery of multiple mobile phones has raised further questions about the circumstances surrounding the alleged incidents and whether other passengers may have been affected.
The police response has also attracted praise from members of the community, particularly following the arrests and recovery of the alleged stolen property.
The case highlights concerns about the safety of passengers using informal or private transport, particularly where travellers may have limited information about the people operating the vehicles.
Authorities are expected to continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged thefts and determine whether additional charges could follow.
