Asafo Companies One and Two from the Effutu area have expressed their support for Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin during a solidarity visit to his residence in Accra.
The traditional groups reportedly joined the Effutu Member of Parliament in chanting “Sammy atɔn gold, abɔ ka,” a statement that has become associated with Afenyo-Markin’s criticism of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and its Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi.
Footage from the visit showed members of the Asafo groups chanting and dancing alongside Afenyo-Markin as they demonstrated their support for the Minority Leader.
The visit comes at a time when Afenyo-Markin and Gyamfi are engaged in a public dispute over issues surrounding GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
Afenyo-Markin has been demanding accountability over a reported US$1.7 billion loss associated with the programme in 2025. He has questioned the management and implementation of the programme and GoldBod’s role in the transactions.
Gyamfi, however, has rejected the characterization of the figure as a loss incurred by GoldBod. He has pointed to the organisation’s audited financial statements, arguing that GoldBod recorded an operational surplus and an overall positive financial position.
The disagreement has subsequently moved beyond political commentary, with Afenyo-Markin taking legal action against Gyamfi over statements he considers defamatory.
The Minority Leader announced in Parliament that he had filed a defamation suit against the GoldBod CEO following allegations made against him during the controversy.
The solidarity visit by the Asafo Companies therefore comes against the backdrop of an increasingly heated public debate between the two men.
The Asafo groups’ chant has attracted attention on social media, with the footage generating reactions from members of the public who have been following the dispute.
Afenyo-Markin has maintained that his concerns are primarily focused on the operations of GoldBod and the need for accountability over the reported losses associated with the gold purchase programme.
During the solidarity gathering, the Effutu MP also addressed other allegations surrounding the controversy and denied claims that there were compromising recordings involving him.
The visit by the traditional groups highlights the support Afenyo-Markin continues to receive from sections of his Effutu constituency as the disagreement with Gyamfi unfolds.
Meanwhile, the legal proceedings and the wider debate over the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme are expected to keep the dispute in the public spotlight as both sides continue to defend their respective positions.
