The qualification race for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has officially begun, with three countries already guaranteed places at the tournament.
Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have secured automatic qualification because they will jointly host the 2027 edition of the continental competition. The three East African nations are set to make history by becoming the first countries to jointly stage the AFCON.
The tournament, officially known as the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON PAMOJA 2027, will bring together 24 national teams from across Africa. The Swahili word “Pamoja” means “together”, reflecting the joint hosting arrangement involving the three countries.
Although Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda already have their places secured, they are participating in the qualification process. Their presence means the qualification structure has been adjusted to determine the remaining 21 teams that will join the three hosts at the finals.
In nine qualifying groups that do not contain any of the host nations, the top two teams will earn qualification. This will account for 18 of the remaining 21 places.
Special arrangements apply to the three groups containing the host nations. Since Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda already have automatic places, only the highest-ranked non-host team in each of those groups will qualify for the tournament.
This format ensures that the final competition will have exactly 24 participating nations.
For the host countries, automatic qualification provides an opportunity to prepare for the tournament without the pressure of having to secure a place through their results. However, their participation in the qualifiers will still provide valuable competitive experience ahead of the tournament.
The 2027 AFCON is expected to be a major sporting event for East Africa, with matches scheduled to be played across venues in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
Kenya is set to host matches in Nairobi, while Tanzania will stage games in Dar es Salaam. Uganda will also welcome continental football fans to Kampala.
Attention will now turn to the remaining African nations as they battle for the 21 available qualification spots. The competition is expected to produce intense battles as countries seek to secure their places at one of Africa’s biggest football tournaments.
For Ghana and other traditional AFCON contenders, the qualification campaign will be closely watched as national teams begin their journey toward the 2027 finals.
