Supreme Court Overturns GH¢1 Million Judgment Debt Ruling Against Asamoah Gyan

The Supreme Court of Ghana has set aside a High Court ruling that ordered seven commercial banks to pay GH¢1 million on behalf of former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan.
The apex court unanimously ruled that the garnishee proceedings used to enforce the judgment were procedurally flawed and failed to meet the necessary legal requirements. Consequently, the directive compelling the banks to release funds on Gyan’s behalf was declared null and void.
The Supreme Court’s decision brings relief to the football icon, who had faced mounting legal pressure after the High Court’s order. Legal experts say the ruling reinforces due process in enforcing financial judgments and sets an important precedent for future debt recovery cases in Ghana.
The court further emphasized that garnishee orders — which allow creditors to recover debts directly from a debtor’s bank accounts — must be applied strictly within the bounds of the law. Failure to adhere to these procedures, it said, could amount to an abuse of judicial authority.
This verdict marks a significant victory for Asamoah Gyan and underscores the Supreme Court’s role in ensuring fairness and procedural integrity within Ghana’s justice system.
