Stanley Nwabali Opens Up on Losing Both Parents Amid AFCON

Nigeria’s Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has shared the emotional toll of losing both his parents within a short span, revealing the profound impact it has had on his life and football career.

Nwabali revealed that his mother passed away on December 31, 2025, just a month after the death of his father. Experiencing both losses so close together has been extremely difficult for the 29-year-old, who plays his club football with Chippa United in South Africa.

Speaking candidly in an interview, Nwabali admitted that the grief was overwhelming at times. “Most times, I feel like quitting,” he confessed. “It’s not easy for anyone to lose both parents within such a short period. My mother meant so much to me, and losing her right after my father has been very painful.”

The tragedies coincided with his participation in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, adding another layer of emotional strain as he tried to balance personal loss with professional commitments. Despite these challenges, Nwabali credited the support of his teammates and coaching staff for helping him stay focused and continue performing on the field.

Fans and the football community have expressed an outpouring of sympathy and support for Nwabali, applauding his courage and resilience in navigating one of the most difficult periods of his life while maintaining his role as a key player for the Super Eagles.

Reflecting on the year, Nwabali described it as one of the hardest of his life. He emphasized that while the losses have been heartbreaking, they have also taught him strength and the importance of leaning on loved ones during times of hardship.

Nwabali’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the personal struggles athletes often face behind the scenes, showing that even in the world of professional sports, life’s challenges can test resilience and emotional endurance.
