South African police have arrested five people following a major operation targeting an alleged illicit drug manufacturing facility in Limpopo Province.
Authorities said the operation resulted in the seizure of drugs and laboratory equipment with an estimated street value of more than US$37 million, along with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The suspects, aged between 20 and 47, are reportedly made up of two Mexican nationals, two Zimbabwean nationals and one Malawian. Police said the arrests followed an overnight raid on a farm in Limpopo where the suspected operation was allegedly being conducted.
According to South African authorities, the discovery points to what they described as a sophisticated, industrial-scale operation allegedly intended to produce illegal substances for distribution.
The raid forms part of broader efforts by South African law enforcement agencies to disrupt organised criminal networks involved in the illegal drug trade.
Authorities have recently carried out several operations involving suspected international drug networks. The involvement of Mexican nationals in a number of recent investigations has also prompted concerns among investigators about possible expansion of international organised crime networks into parts of Africa.
The latest operation was conducted by officers including members of the Hawks, South Africa’s priority crime investigation unit. The head of the Hawks in Limpopo said the arrests should serve as a warning to organised criminal groups operating in the province.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Musina Magistrates Court to face charges relating to the alleged manufacture and possession of illicit drugs. Their appearance will allow the legal process to begin, while investigators continue working to establish the full scope of the alleged operation.
The seizure is considered significant because of the estimated value of the drugs and equipment involved. It also highlights the continued efforts by South African authorities to identify and dismantle large-scale criminal operations rather than focusing only on individual street-level offences.
Police have not indicated that the investigation is over, meaning additional developments could follow as investigators examine the evidence recovered during the operation and determine whether other people were involved.
The arrests come amid growing concerns about organised drug networks operating across national borders. South Africa’s position as a major regional transport and commercial hub has made it an important focus for authorities seeking to disrupt international criminal activity.
