Sir Sam Jonah inducted into US National Academy of Engineering
The United States National Academy of Engineering has elected Ghanaian business mogul and Executive Chairman of Jonah Capital, Samuel Esson Jonah, popularly known as Sir Sam Jonah, as a Foreign Member.
His induction into the Academy is in honour of his distinguished contributions to engineering, especially “for leadership and technical contributions in advancing the mineral industry in Africa”.
Sir Jonah was previously President of AngloGold Ashanti and is said to have shared the strategic leadership of the company with its CEO, Bobby Godsell.
The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is a private, independent, nonprofit institution that provides engineering leadership in service to the nation. The mission of the National Academy of Engineering is to advance the well-being of the nation by promoting a vibrant engineering profession and by marshalling the expertise and insights of eminent engineers to provide independent advice to the federal government on matters involving engineering and technology.
The Academy is looking forward to officially welcome Sir Sam Jonah as a Foreign Member and other new members on Sunday, October 6 in Washington DC, with the induction ceremony of the National Academy of Engineering (NAB) class of 2019.
This honour adds to the numerous honours the Ghanaian business mogul has received around the globe over the years.
Being the first Ghanaian to be knighted in the 21st century, he was presented with an honorary knighthood by the Prince of Wales, in recognition of his achievements as an African businessman.
He also received an honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc) degree jointly awarded him by the Camborne School of Mines and the University of Exeter (UK) in 1996.
Born in Obuasi, Sir Jonah had his high-school education at the Adisadel College in Cape Coast, Ghana, then earned an Associateship in Mining Engineering at the Camborne School of Mines, Cornwall, England, and subsequently an MSc in Mine Management at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London.
