Semenyo Explains decision to extend Bournemouth contract despite interest from top Clubs

In a move that has delighted AFC Bournemouth fans and perhaps raised a few eyebrows across Europe, Antoine Semenyo has put pen to paper on a new long-term contract with the Cherries, extending his stay at the Vitality Stadium until 2030.1 The decision comes despite significant interest from several top-tier clubs, including Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and Chelsea.2
Semenyo, who enjoyed a stellar 2024/2025 season with 13 goals and seven assists in all competitions, has become a pivotal figure for Bournemouth under manager Andoni Iraola.3 His impressive performances led to widespread speculation about a potential summer transfer, with reports suggesting bids upwards of £60-70 million would be required to prise him away from the south coast.
However, in an interview with Sky Sports aired on July 20, 2025, the Ghanaian international candidly explained his decision, emphasizing the crucial role of feeling “wanted” and the desire to continue his development in a comfortable environment.4
“I mean, when you go somewhere, you want to feel wanted, and I didn’t feel that elsewhere,” Semenyo stated. “So, this was my safe place. I felt wanted, and it’s good to be back. So, yeah, it feels great. I think I just want to be playing.”
He further highlighted his ambition to remain injury-free and contribute to Bournemouth’s success in the upcoming 2025/2026 season. “I want to be playing injury-free. I think that’s the most important thing for me, and we’ve got a good group here, and we’re wanting to achieve great things this year. So, it’s still the best place to be right now.”
Semenyo’s loyalty is a significant boost for Bournemouth, especially as the club has seen other key players, such as Milos Kerkez and Dean Huijsen, depart for Liverpool and Real Madrid, respectively. His commitment signals Bournemouth’s ambition to build around their top talents and continue their upward trajectory in the Premier League.6
Since joining the Cherries from Bristol City in January 2023, the 25-year-old has made 89 appearances, netting 22 goals and providing 10 assists. His pace, physicality, and versatility have made him a fan favourite and a constant threat to opposition defences.
AFC Bournemouth’s President of Football Operations, Tiago Pinto, expressed his delight at securing Semenyo’s future. “Antoine has been crucial to the club’s progress and is a key member of the project here at Vitality Stadium,” Pinto said.7 “We have a great relationship with Antoine and we’re looking forward to continuing that as we hope to build on a record-breaking season. His commitment to the club matches our ambition and I’m excited to see what can be achieved as we prepare for the new campai8gn.”
With pre-season training underway, Semenyo’s decision to stay provides a strong foundation for Bournemouth as they aim to build on their impressive ninth-place finish in the previous Premier League campaign.9
