Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has dismissed reports that he was arrested or detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
The reports circulated on Saturday, August 15, 2026, claiming that the former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) had been taken into custody in connection with investigations into alleged financial irregularities.
Awuku, however, has strongly rejected the claims, describing reports of his arrest as false.
In a video shared on social media on Sunday, August 16, the Akuapem North MP was seen in Kumasi alongside popular NDC sympathiser Appiah Stadium.
Addressing the reports, Awuku questioned how he could have been arrested on Saturday when he was participating in the New Patriotic Party’s regional elections.
He explained that he had been in the Eastern Region for the party’s elections on Saturday before travelling to Kumasi on Sunday.
The reports of his alleged arrest were linked to his previous role as Director-General of the NLA. Claims circulating suggested that EOCO had detained him as part of investigations into financial transactions and other dealings at the Authority.
However, no confirmed evidence of an arrest has been established in the reports available, while Awuku’s public appearance in Kumasi and his direct denial have challenged the claims.
The development has generated discussion among political supporters and social media users, particularly because of the allegations surrounding his former position at the NLA.
Awuku’s denial places the focus on the need for accurate information as investigations involving public officials and state institutions continue to attract public interest.
For now, the MP maintains that the reports of his arrest are completely false. His appearance in Kumasi on Sunday has also provided a public response to the claims that had circulated the previous day.
