Roberto Martínez Defends Ronaldo Amid Criticism Over Age and Role with Portugal

Portugal coach Roberto Martínez has hit back at critics questioning the inclusion of Cristiano Ronaldo in the national team, insisting that the 40-year-old remains an invaluable asset to the squad.

Martínez emphasized that Ronaldo’s selection is based purely on merit, citing the striker’s consistent goal-scoring record and outstanding club form. “He’s a goal-scorer for us,” Martínez said, highlighting Ronaldo’s ability to stretch defences and create opportunities for teammates.

Addressing concerns about Ronaldo’s age, Martínez dismissed the criticism outright. “Cristiano doesn’t work or play like a 39‑year‑old,” he remarked, praising the forward’s fitness, discipline, and work ethic. Beyond physical abilities, the coach stressed that Ronaldo’s leadership and experience — with over 200 caps and six European Championships — are crucial for guiding the team.

Martínez also pointed to Ronaldo’s hunger and passion as defining qualities. He described how the forward’s commitment to representing Portugal inspires both veterans and younger players alike, making him a central figure on and off the pitch.

The coach defended Ronaldo’s recent goal-scoring statistics, noting that he remains highly productive, having scored 25 goals in his last 30 games. Martínez argued that the striker’s influence extends beyond numbers, serving as a role model for professionalism and dedication within the squad.

For Martínez, Ronaldo’s value is not rooted in nostalgia but in his continued ability to contribute effectively to Portugal’s performance, making him a key player despite his age.
