President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to launch a private ferry service operating from Tema, aimed at improving coastal transportation and reducing the pressure on congested road networks. The new initiative, while privately managed, will form part of Ghana’s broader strategy to enhance transport infrastructure.
The President explained that the ferry service will link key coastal points, providing commuters and light freight operators with a reliable alternative to heavily trafficked roads. The initiative comes in response to growing calls for diversified transport options, especially given the rapid increase in traffic across Greater Accra and other urban centres.
In his address, Mahama highlighted the importance of private sector participation in national development projects, noting that the ferry service is expected to bring both economic and environmental benefits. Residents of coastal communities, particularly between Tema and neighbouring ports or settlements, expressed optimism that the ferry service would improve access to workplaces, schools, healthcare facilities, and trading hubs, offering a safer and faster alternative to road travel.
