Porter Sentenced to 18 Months for Stealing GH¢3,500 from Trader in Tarkwa

A porter has been sentenced to 18 months in prison with hard labour after being found guilty of stealing money from a trader in the Western Region of Ghana. The case was heard at the Tarkwa District Magistrate Court Two, where the accused, identified as Eric Essuman, also known by the nickname “Nzema,” faced charges of theft.
According to court records, Essuman allegedly stole GH¢3,500 from the trader while performing his duties as a porter. The prosecution presented evidence confirming that the money was taken without the owner’s consent, a clear violation of Ghanaian law. After reviewing the evidence, the presiding magistrate found Essuman guilty and imposed the custodial sentence, which includes hard labour, to serve as both punishment and deterrent.
The court’s decision highlights ongoing efforts by judicial authorities to protect citizens’ property rights and maintain public trust in the legal system. Theft, particularly cases involving public trust or employment roles, continues to be a concern across many communities, and firm sentencing is viewed as a method to discourage such behaviour.
Community members and legal observers have welcomed the ruling, noting that swift and decisive action against offenders is necessary to uphold law and order. The sentence is intended not only to punish Essuman but also to send a strong message that theft of money or property will face serious legal consequences under Ghana’s criminal justice system.
The Tarkwa case serves as a reminder for individuals in positions of trust to act responsibly and ethically, and it underscores the judiciary’s commitment to deterring criminal activity and ensuring accountability in everyday transactions.
