Police Search for Ayittey Powers Over Alleged Threat Against Yaw Ampofo Ankrah

The Ghana Police Service is reportedly searching for former professional boxer and boxing promoter Michael Ayittey Okine, popularly known as Ayittey Powers, following an alleged threat against the life of National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

The development follows a dispute between the two personalities that has attracted public attention within Ghana’s boxing community.

According to the report, Ampofo Ankrah has reported the alleged threat to the police, prompting authorities to begin efforts to locate Ayittey Powers as part of their investigation. The nature of the alleged statement and the circumstances surrounding it are expected to form part of the police inquiry.

The disagreement reportedly stems from an earlier dispute involving Ayittey Powers and the National Sports Authority. The former boxer had previously criticised the NSA leadership following the cancellation of a scheduled boxing bout involving him.

Ampofo Ankrah had responded to the criticism by warning Ayittey Powers to stop what he described as unnecessary attacks and insults.

The latest development has now moved the dispute beyond public exchanges, with the police reportedly becoming involved following the alleged threat.

Ayittey Powers is a well-known figure in Ghanaian boxing. During his active career, he competed professionally before becoming involved in boxing promotion and other activities within the sport.

His outspoken personality has also made him a familiar figure in Ghana’s sporting circles, particularly when discussing issues affecting boxing and the organisation of fights.

Ampofo Ankrah, meanwhile, heads the National Sports Authority, the government agency responsible for sports infrastructure and the development and promotion of sports in Ghana.

The disagreement between the two men has therefore attracted attention because of their respective positions within the country’s sporting sector.

The police investigation is expected to establish exactly what was said, the circumstances in which the alleged threat was made and whether any offence was committed.

Importantly, the fact that Ayittey Powers is being sought or investigated does not mean that he has been found guilty of any offence. The allegation remains subject to investigation, and any criminal responsibility would have to be established through the appropriate legal process.

The latest incident has also generated discussion among boxing followers, many of whom have followed the disagreements between the former boxer and sports authorities.

The dispute comes at a time when Ghana’s boxing fraternity continues to push for greater organisation and support for the sport. Disagreements involving promoters, boxers and sports administrators can have an impact on public confidence in the sector.

For now, the police are reportedly working to locate Ayittey Powers and obtain his side of the matter as investigations continue.

Ampofo Ankrah’s decision to report the alleged threat has placed the matter in the hands of law enforcement, meaning further developments are likely to depend on the outcome of the police investigation.

The case also serves as a reminder that public disagreements can have serious consequences when statements are alleged to cross into threats or intimidation.

Until the investigation is completed, all claims surrounding the alleged threat should be treated carefully and distinguished from facts established by the authorities or a court.
