Police involved in arresting female blogger can be punished – ACP David Eklu
The Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) David Eklu has spoken against the police for arresting Candice, a female blogger for writing fake news about actor Kwadwo Nkansah Lilwin.
The Director-General in charge of Public Affairs of the service in a conversation with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM Wednesday morning made it clear that “we still have the publication of false news to create fear and panic in our criminal offenses act even though the criminal libel act has been repealed but we are very cautious in these kinds of issues because we don’t want to be using the police to be suppressing freedom of expression.”
ASP David Eklu in the conversation zionfelix.net monitored continued that the case should have been reported to the National Media Commission instead of inviting the police to arrest Candice, the blogger.
“there is a complain session under the National Media Commission which handles casses like this that can be treated without the involvement of police” he said.
He further told Andy Dosty that “I’m yet to find out if a proper report has been made but to call the police in for this case is not right.” When asked if the lady can sue the police for their action, ACP David Eklu replied yes and added: “that policeman can be taken off if he did not act according to the law.”
He again asked officers to “desist from being used for such cases because it should be properly handled.”
“In this case there was no fear and panic so I was surprised when the police came in and I don’t know the real reason that made the police took that action.” Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) David Eklu told Andy.
The background of this issue started late Monday, October, 29 when Candice published a story on her blog that Lilwin knocked down someone at the premises of Peace FM with his customized car.
According to the false reportage, the actor was caught “explaining to the receptionist at the front desk of Peace FM…he was parking his car when he heard a guy screaming for help claiming he has knocked him down”.
The writer behind the story was on Monday, October 29, 2018, caught red-handed publishing the story online for mischief purposes.
