The 29th edition of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards witnessed an inspiring celebration of excellence as former President John Dramani Mahama and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, graced the occasion held at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. The event brought together key figures in journalism, politics, and traditional leadership to honour media professionals who have made remarkable contributions to Ghana’s democratic and developmental journey.
Addressing the gathering, former President Mahama commended Ghanaian journalists for their dedication and resilience in promoting democracy and holding leadership accountable. He emphasized that “a strong democracy cannot thrive without a free, vibrant, and responsible press,” adding that journalists play an indispensable role in shaping national discourse and protecting citizens’ rights.

The Asantehene, in his keynote address, underscored the need for professionalism and ethics in journalism. He cautioned against misinformation and sensationalism, urging journalists to uphold truth, integrity, and national unity in their reporting. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II also pledged his continuous support for media freedom while encouraging practitioners to balance press liberty with responsibility.

The ceremony featured awards across multiple categories including investigative journalism, photojournalism, digital reporting, and broadcast excellence. Journalists who have championed issues such as climate change, corruption, public accountability, and human rights received recognition for their impactful storytelling.
Several award recipients expressed gratitude to the GJA and sponsors for acknowledging their work, noting that the recognition would inspire them to dig deeper into stories that promote transparency and national progress.

Beyond the awards, the evening also hosted panel discussions focused on the future of journalism in the digital era, the sustainability of media houses, and the importance of maintaining credibility in a rapidly evolving information landscape. Experts and industry leaders stressed the need for continuous training and the adoption of modern tools to enhance media efficiency and trust.
The event concluded with a symbolic gesture as both the Asantehene and President Mahama presented awards to distinguished journalists, reaffirming their shared belief in the power of journalism to strengthen democracy.

The 29th GJA Awards not only celebrated journalistic excellence but also reinforced the vital partnership between the media, government, and traditional authority in shaping Ghana’s national development and global image.
