Pastor Adeboye Explains What Saved Anthony Joshua in Deadly Road Accident

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has shared what he believes was the key factor behind the survival of British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua following a tragic road accident.

Speaking during a recent church service, Pastor Adeboye attributed the boxer’s survival to divine mercy, stressing that it was not by human wisdom or physical strength that Joshua escaped death. According to the respected cleric, Joshua’s experience serves as a powerful reminder of God’s protection over human life.

Pastor Adeboye referenced reports surrounding the accident, revealing that Anthony Joshua had changed seats with another passenger shortly before the crash occurred. Those who later occupied the seat Joshua originally sat in reportedly lost their lives in the incident.

“I read it in the newspapers,” Pastor Adeboye told the congregation. “The people he exchanged seats with died. That is mercy.”

The accident, which occurred on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, claimed the lives of two individuals believed to be close associates of the boxer, while others sustained injuries. Anthony Joshua himself survived with non-life-threatening injuries and was later discharged after receiving medical attention.

Quoting from the Bible, Pastor Adeboye cited Lamentations 3:22–23, reminding worshippers that survival is often beyond human understanding. He emphasised that people remain alive not necessarily because of intelligence or caution alone, but because of God’s mercy.

The cleric used the incident to encourage believers to reflect on their lives and recognise the role of divine grace in everyday experiences. He urged members of the congregation to take the message personally, noting that mercy plays a vital role in shaping destinies.

Pastor Adeboye’s comments have since generated widespread discussion both within religious circles and on social media, with many interpreting the story as a lesson on faith, gratitude, and the unpredictability of life.

Anthony Joshua, a former two-time heavyweight world champion, has not publicly commented in detail on the remarks, but his survival has been met with relief and goodwill from fans across the world.
