NPP MP Questions Government on Number of Shrines in Ghana

Professor Kingsley Nyarko, the Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, has called on the Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Chieftaincy Affairs to provide clarity on how many shrines currently exist in Ghana.
Speaking during a parliamentary session, Professor Nyarko expressed concern over the lack of comprehensive data on shrines, noting that accurate records are vital for cultural regulation, land management, and chieftaincy oversight. He asked whether the government is tracking both registered and unregistered shrines nationwide and urged the ministry to provide transparent information.
The question has sparked wider debate about the management and governance of traditional sites in Ghana, particularly regarding their role in local communities, land rights, and heritage preservation. Observers are awaiting the minister’s response, which could shape future policies on cultural and chieftaincy matters.
