The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is holding its regional executive elections as the party works to renew and strengthen its leadership structures across Ghana.
The elections are part of the party’s internal reorganisation process and are intended to produce regional executives who will oversee the NPP’s activities in the various regions. The polls are taking place amid preparations for the party’s broader organisational activities in the coming months.
The regional elections have attracted interest from several party members seeking positions within their respective regional structures. Among the positions being contested are regional chairman, first and second vice-chairmen, secretary, treasurer, organiser, youth organiser, women’s organiser, communications officer and Nasara coordinator.
In the North East Region, for example, 34 aspirants filed nominations to contest various positions ahead of the regional elections. The contest included two candidates for regional chairman, two for first vice-chairman and two for second vice-chairman. Several candidates also entered the races for secretary, deputy secretary, treasurer and organiser positions.
The elections are considered important for the NPP because regional executives play a significant role in coordinating the party’s activities at the regional and grassroots levels.
The new executives will be expected to strengthen the party’s organisational structures, mobilise supporters and coordinate activities within their respective regions.
The exercise also comes as the NPP prepares for its subsequent national-level elections. The party has scheduled its national executive elections for October 3, 2026, with nominations expected to take place from August 17 to August 22.
The regional elections therefore form part of a wider internal process that will eventually lead to the selection of the party’s national leadership.
The outcome of the regional polls could have an important influence on the direction of the party’s organisation in the various parts of the country. Newly elected executives will be expected to work together to improve internal coordination and strengthen relationships between the party’s regional and constituency structures.
The elections are also taking place against the backdrop of renewed political activity within the NPP as the party seeks to rebuild and position itself following its performance in the 2024 general elections.
For the party’s supporters, the regional elections provide an opportunity to select leaders who they believe can effectively represent their interests and improve the party’s grassroots organisation.
Candidates contesting the various positions will therefore be looking to secure the confidence of delegates through the electoral process.
