NOBISCO Dormitory Fire Displaces About 900 Students

A devastating fire outbreak at the Northern School of Business (NOBISCO) has left approximately 900 students displaced, triggering concern among parents, school authorities, and the wider community. The fire, which engulfed a female dormitory block, destroyed large sections of the facility and rendered the accommodation uninhabitable, forcing students to flee in the middle of the incident.

According to reports, the blaze broke out unexpectedly, sending students scrambling to safety as flames and thick smoke spread through the dormitory. Many students lost personal belongings including clothing, books, bedding, and other essential items, compounding the distress caused by the sudden displacement. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as students rushed out of the building to escape the fire.

Emergency responders, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, were swiftly deployed to the scene to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures. Their timely intervention helped bring the fire under control, averting what could have been an even greater disaster. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, a fact that has brought some relief despite the scale of destruction.

School authorities confirmed that the affected dormitory housed close to 900 female students, all of whom are now in urgent need of alternative accommodation. Temporary arrangements are being considered to ensure that academic activities are not severely disrupted, while also prioritizing the safety and welfare of the displaced students.

The incident has sparked concern among parents and guardians, many of whom have called for improved safety measures within boarding facilities across the country. Some parents have already begun traveling to the school to check on their children and offer assistance, while others have appealed to authorities to provide immediate relief items such as mattresses, clothing, and food.

Local authorities and education officials are working closely with the school’s management to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate support for affected students. Discussions are ongoing regarding temporary housing solutions, including the possible use of nearby school facilities or community structures to accommodate those displaced.

Meanwhile, investigations have been launched to determine the cause of the fire. Officials have indicated that findings from the investigation will guide future preventive measures to reduce the risk of similar incidents occurring in schools. Fire safety advocates have once again emphasized the need for regular inspections, functional fire extinguishers, and proper emergency response training within educational institutions.

The NOBISCO dormitory fire adds to a growing list of fire incidents in Ghanaian schools in recent years, raising broader questions about infrastructure safety and preparedness. Stakeholders are urging government agencies, school authorities, and development partners to invest in improved safety systems to protect students and staff.

As relief efforts continue, affected students are being encouraged to remain calm while arrangements are made to restore normalcy. The incident has highlighted the resilience of the students and the importance of coordinated emergency response in safeguarding lives, even in the face of sudden disaster.
