NDC supporters storm police station to demand release of Gomoa West chairman

A group of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters in the Central Region stormed the Bakaano Police Station in Cape Coast, demanding the release of Alhaji Mohammed Kassim, the party’s Chairman for Gomoa West.

The protest followed his arrest in connection with an altercation between members of the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the inauguration of the District Roads Improvement Programme (DRIP) at the Gomoa West District Assembly.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, escalated after NDC members requested the removal of pictures of Mr. Bismark Beasie Nkum, the New Patriotic Party’s Parliamentary Candidate and District Chief Executive, from the machinery.

The dispute disrupted the event, leading to tensions between members of both political parties.

Alhaji Kassim was arrested at Apam Junction on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, by the Central Regional Police Command following a tip-off.

However, according to Abeiku Essien, NDC Central Regional Deputy Youth Organizer, the police have yet to disclose the official charges against the Chairman, who has been detained for over 24 hours.

In an interview with Class 91.3 FM’s Nana Tawiah, the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North, Mr. Kwamena Minta Nyarku, cautioned the police to handle the case with fairness, warning that any mishandling could lead to repercussions from the NDC.

Meanwhile, NDC supporters at the police station expressed their readiness to remain there overnight if Alhaji Kassim was not released.

They criticized the police for arresting someone they believe is innocent and vowed to continue their protest until justice is served.
