National Security Arrests Traders Selling Dangerous “Madala” Chemical in Kumasi

Ghana’s National Security has arrested several traders in Kumasi over the sale of a hazardous chemical locally known as “Madala”. The arrests form part of ongoing efforts to curb the distribution and misuse of dangerous substances in retail markets and protect public health.
According to reports, the traders were allegedly selling the chemical openly to members of the public despite warnings and regulatory restrictions. Authorities say the substance poses significant health and safety risks if mishandled, prompting swift intervention to prevent potential harm.
The National Security personnel conducted targeted operations in major market areas after receiving credible intelligence about the illegal trade of Madala. The operation led to the detention of several suspects, who are now assisting authorities in investigations to determine the full scope of the distribution network.
Officials stressed that the arrests are meant to send a strong message that unauthorised handling and sale of dangerous chemicals will not be tolerated. They emphasised that such substances must only be sold or handled by licensed professionals in accordance with national safety guidelines.
Investigators are also working to trace the supply chain of the Madala chemical to identify suppliers and assess whether additional arrests are necessary. The identities of the arrested traders have not yet been made public as inquiries continue.
Community leaders and market authorities welcomed the action, noting that the presence of hazardous chemicals in public markets is a serious threat to consumer safety. They urged traders and the public to exercise caution, remain vigilant, and report any suspicious products to security agencies immediately.
The National Security Service reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing regulations on chemical safety and encouraged the public to cooperate with authorities to prevent harm and ensure that dangerous substances are not distributed unlawfully. Updates on the investigation and legal proceedings are expected as the case unfolds.
