NAIMOS Rejects GH¢100,000 Bribe, Arrests Alleged Galamsey Kingpin in Eastern Region

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested an alleged galamsey kingpin in the Eastern Region after he attempted to bribe officers with GH¢100,000 to stop them from shutting down his illegal mining site.
The arrest occurred during a special anti-illegal mining operation in Bisasi, located in the Ayensuano District. According to NAIMOS officials, the suspect—believed to be one of the ringleaders behind several illegal mining operations in the area—was apprehended after arriving at the site armed with a pistol and a bag of cash, which he offered to the taskforce as a bribe.
The officers reportedly rejected the offer and proceeded to arrest the suspect. Equipment used in the illicit mining activities was also seized, while the site was immediately shut down. Authorities said the operation was part of a larger national effort to protect the country’s water bodies and forest reserves from the destructive effects of galamsey.
Investigations revealed that the suspect’s illegal mining operations had severely polluted the Ayensu River, a key water source for surrounding communities. Environmental experts warn that such pollution poses serious health risks, including contamination of drinking water and destruction of aquatic life.
Speaking after the operation, NAIMOS officials commended the integrity and professionalism of the taskforce officers who refused the bribe, describing their actions as an example of true patriotism. “We are proud of our men for upholding their duty without compromise,” a spokesperson said. “This shows our determination to protect Ghana’s natural resources regardless of intimidation or financial inducement.”
The suspect is currently in police custody assisting with further investigations. He is expected to face multiple charges, including attempted bribery, illegal mining, and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, has been one of Ghana’s most persistent environmental and economic challenges. Despite numerous government interventions, illegal miners continue to operate in parts of the country, destroying farmlands, polluting rivers, and threatening sustainable livelihoods.
NAIMOS has vowed to intensify operations nationwide and bring offenders to justice, warning that anyone involved in galamsey activities regardless of social or political influence will face the full rigour of the law.
