NAIMOS Arrests Five Chinese Nationals for Illegal Mining Along Birim River

The National Anti‑Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has successfully arrested five Chinese nationals for engaging in illegal mining along the Birim River in Akyem Oda, Eastern Region. The operation is part of an ongoing crackdown on galamsey activities that continue to threaten Ghana’s water bodies and environment.
According to reports, the suspects were caught actively mining and washing minerals directly into the Birim River, an act that poses serious environmental risks including river pollution and land degradation. The crackdown also led to the seizure of machinery and equipment, including excavators and vehicles used in the unlawful operations.
NAIMOS officials explained that the operation targeted multiple illegal mining sites and is part of their festive season campaign to intensify the fight against galamsey. The arrested individuals are currently in custody and will face prosecution under Ghanaian law.
The crackdown underscores Ghana’s continued commitment to protecting its natural resources and curbing illegal mining practices that have long-term impacts on communities and the environment.
This operation also sends a strong message that foreign nationals are not exempt from facing legal action when involved in unlawful mining activities in the country. NAIMOS has vowed to continue such enforcement efforts to safeguard the nation’s rivers and promote responsible mining.
