The Government of Ghana has announced that Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) will receive 500 new vehicles by 2026, as part of efforts to revamp the state-owned transport company. Transport Minister Joseph Bukari-Nikpe revealed that the fleet expansion aims to improve services and restore efficiency to MMTL’s operations.
Details of the Fleet Expansion
According to the Minister, the new vehicles will include:
-
350 Toyota Hiace minibuses
-
100 Toyota Coaster buses
-
50 cargo trucks
The rollout of the new vehicles is expected to begin by the end of 2025, with the full fleet operational by 2026. This move comes in response to MMTL’s current challenges of operating with a limited and aging fleet.
Strategic Goals
Minister Bukari-Nikpe highlighted that the fleet upgrade is part of a broader plan to:
-
Enhance passenger services across Ghana
-
Strengthen the financial performance of MMTL and the State Transport Corporation (STC)
-
Reclaim outsourced contracts to improve revenue generation and ensure sustainability
The government is taking steps to recover some outsourced transport contracts, which will help bolster the operational capacity and financial stability of these state-owned enterprises.
Impact on Public Transport
The vehicle expansion is expected to:
-
Improve accessibility and connectivity for commuters, especially in underserved regions
-
Create job opportunities in the transport sector
-
Support local economies through better mobility and transportation services
This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to revitalizing public transport infrastructure and ensuring that state-owned transport services meet the needs of Ghanaians efficiently and reliably.
