Man Allegedly Takes $81 From ATM After Customer Walks Away

A family is appealing for help after a man allegedly took $81 that was reportedly dispensed by an ATM shortly after a woman had walked away from the machine.

According to the appeal, the woman had gone to an ATM along the highway to withdraw R1,300. However, after completing the transaction, the ATM reportedly displayed an โ€œinsufficient fundsโ€ message.

The woman waited for several minutes, expecting the machine to dispense the cash, but no money reportedly came out. Believing that the transaction had failed, she eventually left the ATM.

However, according to the family, the situation changed shortly after she walked away. The R1,300 allegedly came out of the ATM after the woman had left.

A man who was reportedly in the area allegedly noticed the cash and took it from the machine. The family claims the woman was still nearby at the time.

The man was subsequently allegedly seen walking towards a Shoprite Liquor Store after taking the money.

The circumstances surrounding the incident have prompted the family to appeal to members of the public for assistance in identifying the man or providing information that could help establish exactly what happened.

The family is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who recognises the man from the description or available footage to come forward.

They have asked anyone with useful information to contact Natasha Semekazi.

The family says the money is urgently needed and is appealing for its return.

The incident also highlights the importance of remaining alert when using ATMs, particularly when a machine appears to have failed to complete a transaction. In cases where cash does not come out after a withdrawal attempt, customers are generally advised to confirm the status of the transaction with their bank and, where possible, remain at the ATM until they are certain the transaction has been cancelled or resolved.

At this stage, the allegation against the unidentified man remains unverified, and no determination of wrongdoing has been established.

The family hopes that anyone with information will assist them in tracing the money and resolving the matter.
