Mahama Assures Alan Kyerematen of Key Role Ahead of African Union Chairmanship Bid

President John Dramani Mahama has assured former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen of a significant role as he positions himself for the Chairmanship of the African Union (AU) Commission.
The President’s assurance was delivered on his behalf by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, during a high-level forum held in Accra focused on Africa’s future development and integration. According to Ablakwa, President Mahama considers Kyerematen an invaluable asset whose experience and vision align with Ghana’s broader continental ambitions.
Speaking at the event themed “Building a New United Africa,” the Foreign Affairs Minister revealed that West African leaders have thrown their support behind Kyerematen’s AU bid, signaling growing regional backing for Ghana’s influence within the African Union.
President Mahama, through his representative, emphasized that Alan Kyerematen’s long-standing commitment to African economic integration, industrialisation, and trade development places him in a strong position to contribute meaningfully to the AU’s leadership. He noted that Kyerematen would be given a “very special place” should his continental aspirations materialise.
Mr. Ablakwa further stressed that leadership at the African Union level requires not only political endorsement but also deep institutional knowledge, policy expertise, and strategic leadership, qualities he said Kyerematen possesses.
The President’s remarks highlight Ghana’s renewed push to play a more prominent role in shaping Africa’s political and economic direction, as discussions intensify ahead of upcoming leadership changes at the African Union Commission.
Observers say the endorsement underscores President Mahama’s commitment to pan-African cooperation, unity, and effective continental governance, while reinforcing Ghana’s readiness to contribute experienced leadership to Africa’s most important multilateral institution.
