LIVESTREAMING: Vetting of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice Nominee

Ghana’s Parliament is today holding the much-anticipated vetting of Supreme Court Justice Paul Kwadwo Baffoe-Bonnie, the President’s nominee for the position of Chief Justice. The session, being broadcast live, has drawn nationwide attention as the country evaluates the man expected to lead its Judiciary.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who currently serves as Acting Chief Justice, was nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to succeed Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who retired from office earlier this year. The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, referred the nomination to the Appointments Committee for consideration and report.
During the vetting, lawmakers are expected to question Justice Baffoe-Bonnie on his track record, judicial philosophy, leadership style, and plans for improving access to justice in Ghana. The committee will also assess his understanding of constitutional interpretation, judicial independence, and ethical governance—issues seen as central to the Judiciary’s credibility.
The vetting process, however, has not been without controversy. The Minority in Parliament had earlier expressed concerns about proceeding with the nomination, citing unresolved legal matters surrounding the removal of the former Chief Justice. Minority members argue that the process should have been delayed until the pending cases are concluded.
Despite these concerns, the Majority caucus maintains that the vetting is constitutional and timely, emphasizing the need to avoid a leadership vacuum at the apex of the Judiciary. The Chairperson of the Appointments Committee assured the public that the process will be transparent and thorough.
Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, a respected jurist with decades of experience on the Supreme Court, has handled several high-profile cases and is known for his commitment to judicial integrity. If approved by Parliament, he will become the 16th Chief Justice of Ghana, tasked with overseeing judicial reforms and strengthening public confidence in the justice system.
The public is encouraged to follow the vetting proceedings live via national television and online platforms, as Parliament aims to ensure accountability and openness in the confirmation process.
