Limited Voter Registration: Video of Dumelo involved in an ‘altercation’ at a voting centre trends
John Dumelo, the parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon for the NDC, was caught on camera in a viral video engaging in a confrontation with an individual during the Limited Voter Registration exercise.
The incident, reported by Luqman Nayyar, the Assembly member for the Legon electoral area, occurred on May 26, 2024, at the University of Ghana campus.
Nayyar explained that the confrontation started when Dumelo was stopped from speaking with a woman by a person named Dacosta.
He clarified that the altercation was brief and did not escalate into a physical fight, despite some social media claims that contributed to the video’s popularity.
“Dumelo was having a conversation with a lady when Dacosta intervened and prevented it. This led to a minor confrontation. It wasn’t a fight; Dumelo was simply questioning why he was being stopped from talking to the lady. They were separated quickly,” Nayyar told GhanaWeb.
In the video, Dumelo appeared visibly upset, making broad gestures and confronting Dacosta about his interference. Police officers who were present promptly stepped in to calm the situation.
The Limited Voter Registration exercise aims to register individuals who have turned 18 and do not yet have a voter ID, in preparation for the general elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.
