Kennedy Agyapong Urges Afenyo-Markin to Resign as Minority Leader

Outspoken Ghanaian politician Kennedy Agyapong has called on Alexander Afenyo-Markin to step down from his role as Minority Leader in Parliament, citing concerns about leadership effectiveness within the opposition.
Agyapong, a senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a key political figure, questioned the current direction of the Minority caucus under Afenyo-Markin’s leadership. According to him, a change in leadership could strengthen the Minority’s performance in Parliament and improve its ability to hold the government accountable.
The call has generated widespread discussion within political circles, with supporters arguing that leadership changes can help reposition the party and restore confidence among members and supporters. Others, however, caution that removing a Minority Leader in the middle of parliamentary work could disrupt coordination and weaken opposition strategy.
Afenyo-Markin, who has played a prominent role in parliamentary debates and legal arguments on behalf of the Minority, has yet to publicly respond to the call. Political analysts note that any leadership change would require internal party consultations and consensus among Minority Members of Parliament.
The development comes at a time when Ghana’s political space remains highly charged, with Parliament handling critical national issues and political parties preparing for future electoral contests. Leadership decisions within Parliament are therefore being closely watched for their potential impact on legislative effectiveness and party unity.
As reactions continue to emerge, the situation highlights ongoing debates about accountability, performance, and leadership within Ghana’s parliamentary system.
