Ken Agyapong Alleges Bryan Acheampong’s Financial Muscle Is Skewing NPP Flagbearer Race

Veteran Member of Parliament Kennedy “Ken” Agyapong has raised concerns over the influence of money in the ongoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race, accusing fellow aspirant Bryan Acheampong of using his substantial financial resources to gain an unfair advantage.

In a statement to the media, Agyapong claimed that the competition is being “hijacked by money,” warning that excessive financial influence could undermine the party’s credibility and alienate its grassroots supporters. He argued that Acheampong’s “extraordinary financial power” is overshadowing merit, policy proposals, and grassroots engagement, shifting delegate attention and influence in a way that threatens a fair contest.

Bryan Acheampong, the MP for Abetifi and former minister, is known for his extensive network and access to resources, which Agyapong suggests is now being deployed to sway delegates and consolidate support. While Agyapong did not accuse Acheampong of breaking any laws, he emphasized the need for internal campaign finance regulations to ensure a level playing field.

Agyapong also called on the NPP leadership to introduce stricter rules on campaign spending and enhance transparency ahead of the party’s primaries. “If we don’t address the money factor, we risk transforming our internal elections into a contest of wealth rather than vision, and that could alienate our rank and file,” he warned.

Political observers note that Agyapong’s concerns highlight a growing tension within the NPP between financial influence and grassroots support. As the race heats up, the party faces the challenge of balancing fairness, unity, and the perception of equitable competition.

As of now, Bryan Acheampong has not publicly responded to Agyapong’s claims, and the NPP has not issued a formal statement. However, the debate underscores the broader conversation around money in politics, the role of resources in candidate selection, and how Ghanaian parties manage internal democracy.

The unfolding situation will likely shape not only the outcome of the NPP flagbearer race but also the party’s image ahead of the next general elections. Analysts suggest that handling concerns about campaign finance and transparency effectively could strengthen the party’s appeal among voters seeking integrity and fairness in political contests.
