‘I didn’t go there for a beauty contest’ – Asiedu Nketiah explains why he wore wife’s coat to Germany

National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has revisited an incident that attracted considerable public attention after he was photographed wearing his wife’s winter coat during an official trip to Germany.

Asiedu Nketiah, popularly known as General Mosquito, explained that his decision to wear the coat had nothing to do with fashion and was simply a practical choice because of the cold weather in Germany.

According to him, he was not travelling to Europe to participate in a fashion show or compete with anyone over who was better dressed. His primary purpose for the trip was to undertake official duties.

The incident occurred during a visit to Germany with then-President John Dramani Mahama. Photographs of Asiedu Nketiah wearing the coat generated discussions in Ghana, with some people describing the garment as a woman’s coat and making fun of his appearance.

However, Asiedu Nketiah maintained that he saw nothing wrong with using his wife’s clothing, particularly because he did not consider it reasonable to purchase a new winter coat for a short trip.

He explained that the coat belonged to his wife, Vida Asiedu Nketiah, who had previously lived in Canada and had brought the clothing from there. Because the weather in Germany was cold and he expected to spend only a few days in the country, he decided to use the coat rather than spend money on another one.

Asiedu Nketiah also disclosed that the particular coat was not something he had used only once. He indicated that he had previously travelled with his wife’s coat to other countries, including China, London and Denmark.

He argued that there was no law preventing a man from wearing clothing belonging to his wife and noted that couples sometimes share clothes.

The NDC chairman also took aim at critics who had ridiculed his appearance, insisting that the attention given to his clothing was misplaced.

For him, the important issue was the purpose of the trip rather than how he looked in the photographs.

“We did not go there for a fashion show,” was the central point of his response, as he maintained that the delegation had travelled to Germany to work.

He suggested that buying an expensive winter jacket solely for a short visit would not have been a wise use of money when he already had access to suitable clothing.

The issue became a talking point in Ghana, with some public figures and commentators also weighing in on whether state officials travelling with the President should receive advice on appropriate clothing for international engagements.

Asiedu Nketiah, however, remained unfazed by the criticism. He said that while people were free to make jokes about the incident, he did not consider the matter serious enough to distract him from the purpose of his official assignment.

The episode has since become one of the more memorable stories associated with Asiedu Nketiah’s public career, illustrating how the clothing choices of prominent political figures can sometimes attract as much attention as their official activities.
