Gunmen Abduct 28 Muslim Travellers in Central Nigeria

At least 28 Muslim travellers have been kidnapped by armed men in Plateau State, central Nigeria, as they were on their way to attend an annual Islamic event, local police sources have confirmed. The incident has sparked alarm and concern across the region, highlighting ongoing security challenges in parts of Nigeria.

According to reports, the travellers were ambushed by the gunmen while en route to the religious gathering. Eyewitnesses said the attackers arrived in multiple vehicles and quickly overpowered the group, abducting the victims before fleeing the scene. Authorities were alerted immediately and have launched a search and rescue operation.

Police officials confirmed that efforts are underway to locate and safely recover the abducted individuals. “We are coordinating with local security forces and community leaders to ensure the victims are rescued unharmed,” a spokesperson said. However, details regarding the identities of the abducted travellers and the motive behind the attack remain limited.

Kidnappings for ransom have become increasingly prevalent in parts of central Nigeria, with both local residents and travellers at risk of being targeted. Security experts say that armed groups often exploit poor road infrastructure and limited law enforcement presence to carry out abductions.

The incident has drawn reactions from community and religious leaders, who have condemned the attack and called for immediate action to protect innocent civilians. Many emphasised the need for improved security measures along travel routes, especially during times when people are moving to attend religious or cultural events.

Families of the abducted travellers are reportedly in distress, anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones. Authorities have urged them to remain calm while security operations continue, assuring the public that all necessary measures are being taken to secure the release of the victims.

This abduction underscores the persistent security challenges faced by residents in Plateau State and other central regions of Nigeria. It also highlights the urgent need for enhanced policing, community engagement, and intelligence-led operations to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of civilians.

As investigations continue, the government and security agencies are expected to intensify efforts to track down the gunmen and bring them to justice. Meanwhile, communities in the affected areas remain on high alert, hoping for a safe resolution to the latest act of violence.
