Greater Accra Leads Firearm Surrenders as Gun Amnesty Deadline Approaches

The Greater Accra Region has emerged as the leading region in Ghana’s ongoing gun amnesty programme, recording the highest number of firearms voluntarily surrendered as the deadline for the exercise draws near.

Security authorities say the strong response from residents in the region reflects growing public awareness about the dangers posed by illegal firearms and the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining national security. The gun amnesty programme allows individuals in possession of illegal or unregistered firearms to surrender them without fear of arrest or prosecution.

According to officials overseeing the exercise, community cooperation has played a significant role in the success recorded so far. Engagements with traditional leaders, opinion leaders, and civil society groups have helped encourage firearm holders to come forward and comply with the initiative.

Security agencies have commended the Greater Accra Region for setting an example, noting that the voluntary surrender of weapons contributes to reducing violent crime, armed robbery, and accidental shootings. Authorities believe that removing illegal firearms from circulation will significantly enhance public safety and stability.

The amnesty programme forms part of broader national efforts to curb the proliferation of small arms and light weapons across the country. Officials have consistently warned that illegal firearms pose a serious threat to peace and security, particularly during election periods and festive seasons when tensions and public gatherings increase.

While Greater Accra currently leads in the number of surrendered weapons, security agencies say participation from other regions has also been encouraging. However, they have urged individuals who are still in possession of illegal firearms to take advantage of the remaining window before the deadline expires.

Authorities reiterated that once the amnesty period ends, law enforcement agencies will intensify operations to identify, seize, and prosecute individuals found with illegal firearms. This, they say, makes voluntary surrender the safest and most responsible option.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that all surrendered weapons are handled professionally and securely, and that the identities of individuals who participate in the amnesty are protected.

As the deadline approaches, security officials continue to appeal to the public to support the initiative, stressing that the success of the gun amnesty programme depends on cooperation from all segments of society. They believe sustained public engagement will help strengthen peace, reduce crime, and create a safer environment for all citizens.
