Government to Complete 23 Unfinished Road Projects Worth GH¢15 Billion – Mahama

The Government of Ghana has announced plans to complete 23 unfinished road projects left incomplete by the previous administration, with a combined estimated cost of GH¢15 billion. President John Dramani Mahama revealed this during the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA), emphasising the administration’s commitment to improving national infrastructure and ensuring continuity of critical development projects.
According to President Mahama, the 23 road contracts span approximately 573 kilometres across the country. These projects were initiated under the former government but stalled due to inadequate funding, leaving several regions without the promised road infrastructure. The current administration has prioritised their completion as part of its broader Big Push programme to boost economic growth and connectivity.
The President noted that work has already begun on 50 major road projects under the Big Push initiative, covering about 1,144 kilometres at an estimated total cost of GH¢50 billion. These projects are designed to open economic corridors, create employment opportunities, and reduce transportation costs for both goods and people across Ghana.
Completing the 23 unfinished road contracts, according to Mahama, is more than an infrastructure effort; it is a step towards stimulating economic activity and improving connectivity between regions. The projects are distributed across all 16 regions of the country, and significant progress is expected to be visible by the end of the year.
The government also plans to clear outstanding debts owed to contractors from previous contracts, a move seen as essential for ensuring timely completion and sustaining momentum in the road sector. Authorities emphasised that addressing these arrears will restore confidence in public infrastructure projects and prevent future delays.
Investing in road infrastructure remains a central focus for the administration. Improved roads not only facilitate the safe and efficient movement of people and goods but also play a critical role in stimulating local economies and attracting investment to various regions of Ghana.
President Mahama’s announcement signals a renewed commitment to finishing stalled projects and ensuring that all citizens benefit from the development of reliable and modern road networks across the nation.
