The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has rescued a man who became trapped inside a Kia Rio following a road crash at Suhum Niifio along the Accra–Kumasi Highway.
The accident, which occurred on Sunday, August 16, 2026, involved a Ford F-150 and a Kia Rio. Firefighters from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station responded to the scene after receiving reports of the crash.
Upon arrival, the firefighters found a casualty trapped inside the Kia Rio. Using specialised rescue and extrication equipment, the emergency personnel worked to free the man from the damaged vehicle.
The casualty was subsequently transported to the Suhum Government Hospital for medical treatment. No death was recorded in the accident.
Preliminary information indicates that the crash occurred when the Ford F-150 allegedly collided with the rear of the Kia Rio while overtaking.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with unsafe overtaking, particularly on busy highways where vehicles travel at considerable speeds.
In addition to the rescue operation, GNFS personnel recovered valuable items from the crash scene.
Among the items retrieved were GH¢50,000 and US$5,231.81 in cash, as well as mobile phones, National Identification cards and other personal belongings.
The recovery of the cash and other valuables was part of the emergency response at the scene, ensuring that the belongings could be secured following the accident.
The successful rescue also demonstrated the importance of having trained emergency personnel and appropriate equipment available to respond quickly when road crashes occur.
Being trapped inside a damaged vehicle can make it difficult for victims to escape without assistance, particularly when parts of the vehicle are severely damaged.
The GNFS has subsequently used the incident to remind motorists to exercise greater caution when using the highway.
Drivers have been encouraged to observe road safety regulations and avoid dangerous manoeuvres that could put themselves and other road users at risk.
Overtaking requires drivers to carefully assess traffic conditions and ensure that there is sufficient space and visibility before attempting the manoeuvre.

Although the accident did not result in any recorded fatalities, one person had to be rescued from a damaged vehicle and taken to hospital for treatment.
