The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has rescued a man who was trapped inside a Kia Rio following a road crash on the Accra–Kumasi Highway at Suhum Niifio in the Eastern Region.
The accident occurred on Sunday, August 16, 2026, and involved a Ford F-150 pickup and a Kia Rio.
Personnel from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station responded to the incident after receiving information about the crash. Firefighters reportedly arrived at the scene and found a casualty trapped inside the Kia Rio.
Using specialised extrication equipment, the firefighters worked to free the trapped man from the vehicle.
After he was successfully rescued, the casualty was transported to the Suhum Government Hospital for medical attention.
Preliminary information provided by the GNFS indicates that the crash occurred when the Ford F-150 allegedly collided with the rear of the Kia Rio while overtaking.
The incident has been attributed to wrongful or unsafe overtaking, highlighting the dangers associated with motorists attempting to overtake without ensuring that the road ahead is clear and safe.
Fortunately, no deaths were recorded in the crash.
In addition to rescuing the trapped casualty, firefighters reportedly retrieved a number of valuables from the scene.
The recovered items included GH¢50,000 in cash, US$5,231.81, mobile phones, National Identification cards and other personal belongings.
The valuables were reportedly secured to ensure that they could be returned to their rightful owners.
The incident once again highlights the important role emergency responders play in road crashes, particularly when victims become trapped inside damaged vehicles.
The use of specialised rescue equipment allows firefighters to remove casualties safely while reducing the risk of further injury during rescue operations.
The GNFS has used the incident to remind motorists about the importance of observing road safety regulations.
