Ghana National Council of Sweden Engages With New Ghana’s Ambassador to Denmark and Sweden

The Ghanaian community in Sweden has deepened efforts to strengthen long-term collaboration with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Denmark following a high-level engagement between the Ghana National Council of Sweden (GNCS) and Her Excellency Dr. Margaret Miewien Chebere, Ghana’s Ambassador to Denmark and Sweden.

On Tuesday, 16 December, a five-member delegation from GNCS paid a courtesy visit to the Ambassador at the Ghana Embassy in Denmark shortly after she presented her Letters of Credence to the King of Denmark. The delegation was led by GNCS Chairperson, Nana Afia Achiaa Deiwaa, and comprised leaders of Ghanaian associations in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö. Former Swedish Member of Parliament, Hon. Joe Frans, was also present.

During the meeting, Nana Afia Achiaa Deiwaa officially welcomed the Ambassador and commended her for her openness and willingness to engage with the Ghanaian community in Sweden soon after assuming office.

A key highlight of the discussions centered on GHANAFEST 2026, scheduled for Saturday, 6 June 2026. The Chairperson explained that the maiden GHANAFEST, held in August 2025, focused mainly on cultural and traditional expressions, including food, dance, and fashion. However, the 2026 edition is set to be expanded to include Business, Trade, and Exhibitions, with a dedicated exhibition segment planned for 4 June 2026. This component will place emphasis on agriculture, waste management, and renewable energy.

Nana Deiwaa stressed the need for strong collaboration with the Ghana Embassy, similar to the support received during the inaugural edition, to ensure the success of GHANAFEST 2026 in Stockholm. She noted that the event aims to create a platform that connects Ghanaian and Swedish investors for mutual economic growth.

The meeting also reviewed the Mobile Consular Service (MCS), a joint initiative between the Ghana Embassy and GNCS that brings essential consular services, including passport and visa applications, to major cities across Sweden. While applauding the Embassy for its continued cooperation, Nana Deiwaa highlighted the growing demand for the service and proposed that it be organized twice annually instead of the current once-a-year arrangement.

The Ghana National Council of Sweden, which serves as the umbrella body for registered Ghanaian associations in the country, currently has seven member associations. Nana Deiwaa reaffirmed the Council’s openness to welcoming additional registered associations and outlined ongoing efforts to engage those yet to join.

In her closing remarks, Nana Afia Achiaa Deiwaa expressed GNCS’s gratitude to the Ambassador for the productive engagement and reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to sustained collaboration with the Mission. Responding, Her Excellency Dr. Margaret Miewien Chebere welcomed the delegation and expressed her enthusiasm for working closely with GNCS, particularly in support of the Business and Trade Exhibition planned for GHANAFEST 2026.

Other members of the GNCS delegation included Gilbert Mensah, President of the Ghana Union of Gothenburg and Auditor of GNCS; Simon Boahen, Secretary of the Ghana Union of Gothenburg and Secretary of GNCS; and Philip Dan Boateng, a member of the Ghanaian–Swedish Association in Malmö.
