Ghana football became “problematic” under Kwesi Nyantakyi administration
Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwesi Nyantakyi has been replaced on the Fifa Council by president of the Football Association of Malawi, Walter Nyamilandu.
Nyantakyi had held the post since 2015, but has now been officially replaced after Fifa held an election to choose his successor.
Walter Nyamilandu emerged winner in the elections, after beating of stiff competition from South Africa Football Association president Danny Jordan and Tanzania’s Leodegar Tenga.
Nyamilandu and Jordaan went into a run off following a close result after the first ballot, however, the former came out tops with a whopping 53 votes to the latter’s 35.
The elections came off on Sunday during CAF’s Extraordinary Congress in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
It had become necessary to elect a new Fifa Council Member following the suspension of Nyantakyi from all football related activities.
The ex-GFA boss was initially given a 90-day provisional ban by Fifa, before it was later extended by a further 45 days after he was captured reportedly taking a cash gift in a documentary by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
The suspension led to the Wa All Stars owner resigning from positions he held, including that of the Fifa Council membership.
Nyantakyi was also previously the resident of WAFU Zone B and the first vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Last month Nigerian football chief Amaju Pinnick replaced Nyantakyi as CAF’s first vice-president and nowNyamilandu has also taken his place as Fifa Council Member.
Meanwhile, the former Ghana FA boss is currently in court challenging the authenticity of the said investigative piece.
