Ghana and Qatar have agreed to strengthen bilateral labour cooperation, paving the way for the recruitment of skilled Ghanaian professionals in key sectors across Qatar. The announcement came after high-level discussions between Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and Qatari officials in Doha.
The talks highlighted commitments to expand collaboration in trade, investment, security, visa facilitation, and the labour sector. Both countries emphasized the importance of creating structured pathways for Ghanaian workers to access international employment opportunities, particularly in sectors facing skilled labour shortages in Qatar.
Under the proposed labour mobility framework, Qatar has signalled immediate interest in recruiting Ghanaian professionals in fields such as healthcare, tourism, information technology, transport, and logistics. The agreement aligns with Ghana’s Labour Export Programme, which seeks to provide international employment pathways for skilled and trained young professionals.
Minister Ablakwa revealed that both nations have also discussed easing visa requirements for Ghanaian workers to facilitate smoother entry and operations in Qatar. Reports indicate plans to establish a West African visa processing centre in Ghana, which would streamline applications and reduce administrative hurdles for prospective employees.
In addition to the labour pact, the two countries are preparing to host a Presidential Ghana‑Qatar Business Forum during President John Dramani Mahama’s upcoming visit to Doha. The forum aims to promote investment opportunities, strengthen economic ties, and encourage private-sector partnerships that can benefit both nations.
Qatari companies reportedly appreciate Ghanaian workers for their professionalism, strong work ethic, and adaptability, making Ghana a preferred source of skilled labour in the region. The proposed framework will not only provide employment opportunities for Ghanaian professionals but also support Qatar’s ongoing development projects and economic diversification efforts.
The labour agreement is currently awaiting ratification by Ghana’s Parliament, a step considered critical for formal implementation. Once ratified, the pact will formalize recruitment processes, ensure legal protections for Ghanaian workers, and provide mechanisms for monitoring and evaluation.
