Fisheries Ministry suspends four trawler licences over regulatory breaches

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur, has announced the suspension of licences for four industrial trawlers due to multiple violations of fishing regulations.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, August 6, the Minister said the move is part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to enforce compliance and safeguard Ghana’s marine resources.

“We have suspended licences of four trawlers for multiple regulatory violations,” she stated.

The enforcement operation was carried out by the Fisheries Enforcement Unit (FEU), which comprises the Ghana Navy, Marine Police, and community-based enforcement teams.

Madam Arthur noted that the FEU continues to conduct routine monitoring across key fishing zones to tackle illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to sustaining such actions as part of ongoing reforms aimed at promoting sustainable fishing, protecting artisanal fisher livelihoods, and preserving the marine ecosystem.
