Falling mahogany tree causes near disaster in Chiana

Residents of Asunia, a suburb of Chiana in the Kasena/Nankana West District of the Upper East region woke up to an unusual sight of a near accident Monday morning after an over 40 year-old Mahogany tree crashed to the ground.

The tree, sited close to the main road linking the region to Tumu and the rest of the Upper West region, according to residents lost grip of the ground after the four-day continuous heavy rainfall in the area and fell, causing damage to several structures and blocking the road.

Some of the structures destroyed included tables, benches, bicycles and a popular pavilion belonging to the opposition National Democratic Congress. No casualties were recorded.

As at the time Senyalah Castro Cazo, a correspondent for Ghanaweb visited the scene, residents of the area with help from personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service were busily chopping away portions of the huge tree to make way for free flow of traffic.

The District Chief Executive of Kasena/Nankana West District, Gerard Ataogye, who was at the scene of the disaster to assess the situation appealed the residents to stay claim and trust the Ghana National Fire Service as they clear that debris of the tree.

He urged the residents to be each other’s keeper and be watchful for dangers that come with the rainy season.

He made a donation to the response team and assured the area of the Assembly’s commitment to make the road motor able by close of day.

Our rooms are collapsing – Residents cry out.

This disaster occured two days after hundreds of residents in Chiana were displaced as a result of floods following heavy rains in the area.

The situation has left several of the affected residents homeless with some taking shelter with relatives and at government facilities such as schools and clinics.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has done nothing about the situation, residents disclosed.

It is however gathered that DCE for the area, Gerard Ataogye, has instructed for the documentation of residents that have been hit by the flooding while the Assembly work at getting help from NADMO.
