Fake National Security Officer Arrested in Kumasi for Extortion

Authorities in Kumasi have arrested a man impersonating a National Security officer after he allegedly extorted large sums of money from unsuspecting residents. The suspect reportedly used his fake identity to intimidate and coerce individuals, convincing them to hand over cash under the pretense of legal or security-related matters.

According to reports, the man approached several victims in the Ashanti regional capital, claiming to be a legitimate security official. He reportedly threatened or pressured people, exploiting their fear of law enforcement to extract significant amounts of money. Many victims, unaware of the ruse, complied with his demands before realizing they had been deceived.

The Ghana Police Service confirmed the arrest following complaints from victims and vigilant residents who became suspicious of the suspect’s activities. Upon investigation, authorities verified that the individual had no connection with the National Security apparatus, and that his actions were criminal impersonation and extortion.

Police have emphasized that such schemes are illegal and can carry serious penalties under Ghanaian law. Investigators are working to determine the full scale of the operation, including how many people may have been targeted and the total sum of money involved. The suspect is currently in custody as authorities continue to gather evidence and prepare charges.

This incident underscores a growing concern in Ghana over individuals posing as security officers to commit fraud. Authorities are reminding citizens to remain vigilant, verify the credentials of anyone claiming to represent law enforcement or national security, and report any suspicious activity immediately.

Experts note that criminals often exploit fear and authority to manipulate victims, and these cases highlight the importance of public awareness campaigns. The Ghana Police Service has reiterated that real officers will never demand cash payments from citizens outside official legal procedures.

Residents in Kumasi and other regions have been urged to exercise caution, particularly when approached by individuals claiming to be from the National Security or police, and to use official channels to verify identities. Reporting suspicious persons promptly can help prevent further victimization and assist law enforcement in cracking down on similar schemes.

The arrest marks an important step in tackling fraudulent activities targeting citizens, and authorities continue to investigate whether the suspect was acting alone or as part of a larger network. Meanwhile, the public is encouraged to remain alert and cooperate with police in reporting such crimes.
