Expose Colleagues Who Engage in Fraudulent Activities – Customs Boss To Port Officials
Commissioner for the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority has urged customs officials, especially those at the ports to expose colleagues who engage in fraudulent activities.
Mr Isaac Crentsil said he is red alert to deal with any custom official who takes bribe to stifle government’s revenue mobilisation.
His comment follows the drastic reduction of benchmark delivery value of imported containers by a whopping 50 per cent and 30 per cent for imported cars.
Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is head of the Economic Management Team, received a standing ovation when he announced the new duty regime.
The decision, he explained, is to decrease physical handling and processing fees.
Customs officials at the port are expected to work with the new directive to maximise revenue for the government.
There have been reports that some importers and clearing agents with the connivance of officials of customs are sabotaging the system.
In response, Mr Crentsil on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem programme, Friday said such fraudulent activities would not fester under his watch.
He noted that no custom official will be allowed to thwart government’s efforts of ensuring smooth operations at the port and also bring respite to importers.
The customs boss advised his officials at the port to be watchdogs, especially on the junior workers to save their jobs.
“I’m wild and will go after any custom official who allows his subordinate to rob the system. Check them to save your jobs,” he stressed.
Mr Crentsil is confident with the cut of import duties, they can meet their target for 2019.
